Álvaro Ferreira da Silva teaches courses on Business and Economic History in NovaSBE.

He received his PhD from the European University Institute (Florence, 1998) with a thesis titled “Urban Growth, Regulation, and Business Opportunities: Residential Building in Lisbon(1860-1930)”. He served as Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Research, and also as an elected member of the School Council as representative of the faculty. His research interests span through several fields. In recent years he has been working on business groups and corporate networks, leading a research project funded by FCT and participating in two international projects. This research has been published in international journals (Business History, Business History Review), and in two comparative volumes (The Power of Corporate Networks and Oxford Handbook of Business Groups in Developed Countries). He is also interested in technology and business activities in infrastructure projects (transports, power, and sanitation), having published several articles and book chapters during the last years. He currently runs a project on international business and political risk in the 20th century. He was the President of the Portuguese Economic History Association (2013-2017)
